Nexus Mods strengthens AI disclosure

Article date: November 4, 2026 · Announcement: November 3, 2026

Nexus Mods’ November 3 announcement makes a generative-AI-use declaration compulsory for new uploads of mods, or game modifications, while keeping AI-created mods eligible.

Basic disclosure was already mandatory. The detailed transition rules require new uploads to complete updated disclosure and permission fields immediately.

What authors must document

The File Submission Guidelines distinguish AI-Generated Content for predominantly generated work; AI Media for promotional material and page descriptions; and AI Assisted for human-led work. Assisted examples include upscaling, audio cleanup and concept art absent from the final mod. Supporting evidence includes development history and demonstrable understanding of code; moderators can change unsupported classifications.

The new policy requires assisted mod pages to name tools/models and identify AI outputs retained in the release. Statements must change when updates add assisted components or materially change them.

Deadlines and rollout

Existing mods have until January 2, 2027 for detailed assisted statements and mandatory AI/fork permission tags. The grace period does not suspend basic disclosure.

From January 2, notified authors who ignore required fixes risk restrictions or removal; identification remains imperfect and partly manual.

Planned AI-use/training and fork permissions will default to seeking author approval. Permission and discovery improvements are still being developed.

A release review, beyond tags

Our editorial recommendation: make provenance part of the release review, alongside testing.

  • Authors: map AI contributions to files and production steps for each release. Record your review and verify reuse permissions.
  • Reviewers: compare that inventory with the actual download and change log. Ask for test steps, supported game versions and known limitations.

A disclosure tag helps explain production; it cannot establish that a mod works correctly or is safe. Keep functionality and security checks as separate acceptance decisions.
