Checked 30 October 2026. OpenAI’s 28 October changelog introduces API credits for eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers, worth up to $500 monthly. Activation links the subscription to an API organization you own.
Why it matters: an existing subscriber could use the allowance to try an app or automation before committing a separate development budget. An API lets software call an AI service directly. This report checks documentation, not account access or hands-on results.
Who qualifies?
The Help Center requires seven paid days, matching account emails and ownership on both sides; availability also depends on country and rollout cohort. Plus and trials do not qualify. Check the offer before assuming access.
How much, and how to claim?
- Pro: the $100, $200 and $500 tiers receive matching full-month dollar allowances.
- Business: $20 per paid Standard seat plus $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled up to $500 monthly.
The developer guide says the first grant is prorated. Annually prepaid Business receives its year’s allowance upfront. Claim through ChatGPT billing or API Platform billing, then verify the receiving organization’s balance.
Expiry and spending
According to the Help Center, grants expire with the billing cycle, without rollover. Renewals require continued eligibility and availability. Cancellation stops future grants but preserves issued credits until expiry. API billing is separate; no payment method is needed for the grant, but purchased credits can fund subsequent usage.
The developer guide excludes API-key Codex usage and extra ChatGPT or signed-in Codex capacity.
Rate limits still constrain requests and tokens. If the total credit balance is exhausted, the error guide identifies 429 / credit_balance_exhausted; repeatedly retrying will not restore funding.
Our suggestion: choose a small, non-sensitive experiment, inspect its costs, and review any existing automatic recharge before running it. A credit allowance is a reason to test carefully, not to upgrade blindly.
