Checked 31 October 2026. Mistral has released downloadable weights for an improved Mistral Large 4, also called Le Chonk. Its official news index dates the release to 29 October, following the public preview announced on 6 October. The company positions the update for coding and defensive cybersecurity; its performance claims are vendor claims, not tests by The Useful Byte. Release announcement · Dated news index.

What changes for IT teams?
The practical distinction is deployment choice: downloadable weights provide a route to operating the model yourself rather than relying only on a hosted service. That can matter when evaluating how sensitive security data is processed. It does not, by itself, establish that an installation meets an organization's security or residency requirements.
Mistral's model documentation lists approximately 1.05 trillion total parameters and 52 billion active parameters, with multimodal input. It still labels the model public preview. A weights release should therefore not be confused with a blanket general-availability announcement. Model documentation.
Open weights are not an unrestricted license
The published license permits use and modification but requires a separate commercial license before commercial use when the licensee or an affiliate operates a Model-as-a-Service business. It defines exceptions for internal use and access through Mistral's official products. Teams considering redistribution or hosted services should examine the full terms rather than assume ordinary MIT licensing. This is a description of the published terms, not legal advice. Official model license.
Our practical assessment
For a security team, the useful next step is a bounded evaluation—not immediate access to production systems. Start with approved, non-sensitive examples; check whether findings are correct, whether proposed changes preserve functionality, and what human review costs. Keep permissions narrow and require approval before consequential actions.
Self-hosting also transfers operational responsibility: capacity planning, updates, monitoring and access controls still need owners. The number of active parameters is not a complete hardware-sizing guide. We have not downloaded, deployed or benchmarked this model, and are not claiming lower operating costs or better security in a particular environment.
This release is a new deployment option worth assessing, not proof that autonomous security work is safe or that a large model is economical for every organization.
